I'm Amber Whitaker, I am 28 years old, married to Molly Whitaker, and absolutely in love with working dogs. I grew up as an only child until I was 10 years old, but we always had at least one dog. My dad is a policeman who has worked with the K9 Units for most of his career. He would tell me stories of the dogs, take me to watch them being trained, and teach me the importance of their jobs when I was growing up. As I got older, I did my best to learn everything I could about training dogs and--more specifically--training working K9s. When Molly and I met we bonded over our love for dogs. Eventually, we got married and started up Amaranthine Kennel together. I actually graduated college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, so I handle our accounting and record keeping, while Molly gets to focus on the more social aspects of running a kennel and competing. I am also our main/head trainer. Bear was the first dog to be a part of our kennel, and thus my first project pup. Although Molly and I originally planned on working with both European Dobermanns and Labrador Retrievers, we have learned that Labradors are everything we are looking for. Their versatility is under-recognized and one of our goals when working with the breed is to show their true ability and potential. We still have two Dobermanns in our kennel and work with dogs of many breeds in our local Police Department, though!
When it comes to Bear specifically, my favorite thing about him is the utter joy he brings to everyone near him. When he’s competing he seems to just absolutely glow with excitement and joy. His eyes dazzle, his tail almost never stops wagging, and his feet dance. Despite how excited he gets, he is the easiest dog I’ve ever had the joy of handling or training. He learns so quickly and enjoys being given directions and tasks. His work-ethic is truly something for the books.
Dog:
Bear is our most cheerful and sweet dog; he is very charismatic and social, often taking dogs under wing. If any of our other dogs are anxious or hesitant in any situation, Bear is usually the one boosting their confidence. He's always had an exceptional love for conformation shows--mainly due to the social interaction with other dogs--and he’s unique in the sense that he doesn’t really seem to have a favorite sim. He spends his time pretty equally between everyone, as best he can that is.
One other particularly unique trait Bear has is in being an exceptionally caring father. Dogs don’t have the same understanding of or responsibilities as sim fathers, but if any dog were to understand - it would be Bear. Though he’s only sired one litter so far, he was immensely attentive to Bailey--our Lab who whelped the litter--throughout her pregnancy and then equally attentive to the pups. Alpine is his daughter from that litter and their relationship has been more of a “Daughter’s Father” than a “Papa’s Girl” situation! Bear has taught Alpine everything from the art of conformation showing to how to romp around the yard and flush-out seagulls on the beach. However, Alpine very well may have taught Bear the art of sleeping on his back beside his bed instead of in it. Such dorks!
How was your year:
I mentioned previously in this interview that Molly is our main handler, so I haven’t actually worked in the ring with Bear too much this last year. However, I am in the audience at every one of his events. In this last year, Bear has finally secured enough points and participation to apply for his Champion title, which we should have news on soon! It’s so amazing watching Bear compete and Nationals was definitely his favorite event.
Bear has had a fairly successful career so far, he has placed in 3 of his 5 conformation shows and has even seen success in trials. Equally amazing: we’ve seen success in his lineage, as well. Most noteworthy, perhaps, being Amaranthine’s National Autumn--a.k.a. Alpine--who outshined him at Nationals. We are immensely proud of our golden boy.
Extra:
In the coming year we hope to get Bear more thoroughly titled and enter him in a few more sport trials. We’re also aiming to breed him with our recent import, Ruby, after his Champion title is confirmed. Bear is our most thoroughly competed dog and he shows no signs of wanting to ever stop being a part of shows or trials. We are so honored to be lucky enough to call him ours.
