INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Owner: Getting to this point has been such an incredible journey for the Laiche-Lind family, but we all hoped we'd eventually wind up here at Worlds. As the third generation of owner for the kennel, it's been such a challenge stepping out to create my own mark - but I think we're starting to get there. Since Kaiser is the primary family business, I've been showing since I was just a tot. When I was little, I'd drag my twin, Rhys, around with a slip lead and practice what I thought it'd be like to run a dog around the ring. How far we've come! I made the recent change of adding Central Asian Shepherds, like Anja, to the kennel. It was one of the best decisions I've made as the owner of the kennel. They've been everything we needed - and part of why Anja is so beloved to us is that she's like to be our foundation bitch, a fantastic one at that too. She brings an unparalleled intuition to our program and such a willingness work for me and our small team. Don't try getting a stranger to work with her though, she'll shoo them off the property - as she was bred too!
Dog: Anja comes from a long series of dedicated guardian lines, where both a serene but equally fearsome demeanor are highly sought after. We chose her while the world was knee-deep in the winter snow. She was minimally phased and resilient whereas others were not quite there yet. During our aptitude tests, she continued to impress us by demonstrating equal measure of interest in the livestock and respect toward them.
We were captivated by her instinct even at such a young age. It was abundantly clear that her innate drive and astounding off-switch would be something we needed protecting our herds. She's much calmer in temperament than our other dogs within the same breed generally speaking, but her intensity when her herd is threatened far surpasses that of both the others. Kaiser couldn't do it without her! Anja brings such a brilliance and intuition to our team, she's constantly teaching our boys a thing or two despite being the same age.
How was your year: Brilliant! We couldn't have asked for more out of our Anja. She took home Best in Show her first time ringside, excluding Nationals, despite her disinterest in parading about for unfamiliar people. That's asking a lot out of any proper Livestock Guardian, so we think her and the rest of ours deserve many congratulations from us on their tolerance. We've been primarily focusing on her work at home as opposed to showing, but she's been a proper sort there as well. Out of our three Alabai, she's arguably the most naturally attuned to her herds' needs. So all in all, it's been a great year with her and we look forward to many more.
Extra: A right and proper love when she is in the mood for it, we're happy to say that she's not just an outdoor guardian at all times - though none of ours are. She's quite keen on being within close quarters to her young flock, particularly mindful of them, and can at times in equal measure be this way with her people. Given she's so calm and alert normally, it's always a pleasure to be able to say that she can curl up by a fire on a cold winter's day with her handlers if the mood strikes her.
